Eat Here: The Best Carbs
I would ask what your favorite is, but they're all the favorite.
Victory Bread: This is a tiny outlet, with room really for only one customer at a time. It's cash only. The woman at the counter and I didn't speak the same language, which I didn't initially realize, and when I asked her what a particular cake was, she responded, "it's...cake." We had a nice chuckle over that and then I bought two of everything. I'm a fan for life of the sugary baked roll-ups and the huge sweet rolls, pictured above, in particular. (Van Nuys)
La Parolacchia: Long Beach has a notable Italian American history, and a lot of Italian American restaurants to go with it. La Parolacchia sticks out in being very Italian (except the portions are bigger) , which is different than Italian American. Fantastic food. You must get the carbonara (which is made correctly, without cream) and the "Burina" pizza. Cocktails are very well-made, too. (Long Beach)
A La Beirut: I enjoy the chill vibe here, with the paper plates and the free bottles of water. All the energy is focused on the food, which is mostly sandwiches. I think everyone knows that in this world there are sandwiches and there are SANDWICHES, and these are the latter. My friend Andy gets the chicken liver on French bread, which is great if you can hang (I can't for more than a few bites), the beef tongue, and the roast beef. The beef tongue comes with fun herbs and pickles, whereas the roast beef is more USA! USA! in accoutrements. Can't go wrong with either. Be sure to get the fattoush as well: the pomegranate molasses they're working with at A La Beirut is the best I've had. (And I forgot to ask which brand it is.) (Eagle Rock)
